Kumiko Tea Light Lanterns

Kumiko Tea Light Lanterns

Kumiko (kuˈmiko) is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that involves creating intricate patterns by fitting together thin pieces of wood without nails or glue. This ancient art form has been used for centuries to adorn shoji screens, latticework, and other architectural elements. The term “kumiko” refers to the small wooden pieces themselves.

Characterized by its precision and delicacy, kumiko patterns are often inspired by nature and carry symbolic meanings. Some common patterns include asanoha (hexagonal), kikko (tortoise shell), and shippo (seven-pointed star). These geometric designs not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also influence the distribution of light and airflow within a space.

A Modern Renaissance: Kumiko and 3D Printing

Historically, kumiko was crafted entirely by hand, demanding exceptional skill and patience. However, the advent of 3D printing has revolutionized this art form. Now, intricate kumiko patterns can be digitally designed and brought to life with precision, making this once-exclusive craft more accessible to enthusiasts.

While traditional kumiko artisans rely on hand tools like planes, saws, and chisels, 3D printing offers a new approach. By converting complex patterns into digital models, artisans can experiment with various designs and create pieces with greater efficiency. This technological advancement has opened doors for innovative applications, such as incorporating kumiko elements into contemporary furniture, lighting fixtures, and decorative objects.

Lights, Watts, and Wonders

Lights, Watts, and Wonders

LED lights are the ideal choice for illuminating 3D-printed lamps made from PLA filament. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs generate minimal heat, preventing potential warping or damage to the PLA material. Moreover, their exceptional energy efficiency makes them a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for powering your custom lighting creations.

Understanding LED Lights

LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. LEDs produce light through a semiconductor, which makes them more efficient and longer-lasting than incandescent bulbs. A semiconductor is a material that can sometimes let electricity flow through it and sometimes not, kind of like a gate that can open and close. It’s not as good at conducting electricity as metal, but it’s better than an insulator, like rubber.

Incandescent bulbs produce light by heating up a tiny wire inside them until it gets really hot and glows. When you turn on the bulb, electricity flows through the wire, making it so hot that it starts to shine with a bright light.

Joules In The Mix

You may have seen joule amounts printed on light bulb packages. A joule is a measurement of how much energy it takes to move something. It is a measurement of how much energy a light bulb will require. As an easy reference, 1 J/s (Joule per second) = 1 W (Watt).

Every second a light is on, it uses a certain number of joules. This is like eating a snack every second to keep your energy up! The brighter the light, the more joules it uses. A really bright bulb is like eating a big meal, while a dim bulb is like eating a small snack. Joules are like the food for a lightbulb. They give it the energy to shine!

Lumens and LED Lights

When choosing LED lights for your 3D-printed lamps, it’s important to understand lumens. Lumens measure the total amount of visible light emitted by a source. Here’s a comparison chart to help you choose the right LED wattage for your desired brightness:

Lumens (lm)LED WattIncandescent Watt
10-150.11111111111
200-300225
400-5005.640
700-800960
1100-13001275
1600-170014100

These are rough estimates, as actual lumens can vary based on the specific bulb and manufacturer. When selecting LED lights, consider the brightness you need and the atmosphere you want to create in your space.

Bringing It All Together

With the knowledge of LED lights, you’re well-equipped to start your DIY lighting project. 3D printing allows for endless customization options, enabling you to create unique and functional lamp designs that fit perfectly in any room. Whether you’re looking to add a statement piece to your living room or a cozy bedside lamp, the combination of 3D printing and LED technology offers a creative and practical solution.

Solar Lighting: From Dusk to Dawn, Indoors or Out

Solar Lighting: From Dusk to Dawn, Indoors or Out

Solar lighting can be a great way to light up your home or outdoors area for a small cost, while also limiting the need for consuming electricity, thus consuming our limited natural resources. Today we will be taking a look at three great 3D prints for both indoor and outdoor lights, ideal for your own home, or to give as thoughtful gifts to those you cherish. Enjoy!

Tree Solar Lantern

The first 3D print for today is the Tree Solar Lantern, and has the classic lantern shape, with the added detail of having trees incorporated into the design itself. It can easily be hung from a tree branch, or any other number of racks or arrangements, given the sizeable shepherds hook attached to the top of it.

The author suggests printing the main body of the lantern in ASA, while printing the accompanying light refractor for the light bulb in a clear or transparent Petg or TPU material, although we believe many other materials could also work just fine.

The lantern is designed for a 3.15 inch solar lantern top that is readily available in many stores, including Amazon, making it easy to purchase or replace should the need be. Other solar panels might also work, especially if you are not adverse to tinkering with the model itself.

Lumen Lift

Lumen Lift, a 3d print outdoor to indoor lantern.

This next 3D print was inspired by commercial lights, called Lumen Lift, and can be a great and cheap alternative to the expensive options sold at a retail store. This model was designed by our editor here at Altered Rooms, and can be used for both indoor and outdoor purposes.

Unlike our first example, the Lumen Lift is a minimalistic and highly modern lantern, featuring sleek lines and a large surface area for the refractive panels, allowing plenty of light to wash over whatever area you wish to illuminate. It has a large handle, making it easy to hang up or carry around.

The solar light used for this lantern is a 3.35 x 3.35 inch module, available at both Amazon and a range of other online and physical stores. For the print itself, you can go with the tested PLA for the lantern, but it should also be possible to use various other types. In case you need more inspiration for materials, this Altered Rooms filament guide is a great place to start.

Light Pillar

Light Pillar, a 3d print outdoor to indoor lantern.

The third and final model we wish to showcase today is the aptly named Light Pillar, again designed by our editor here at Altered Rooms. This model is not meant to be hung, rather is a freestanding lamp with a stylish and modern ribbed design.

This design is even more economical than the others, as it can be printed in vase mode, although the top cap does require supports for printing. As with the Lumen Lift, the editor recommends white PLA, although there are many other options for the creatives out there.

The solar panel is another one of the 3.35 x 3.35 inch models, and if you buy them from Amazon, they come in a nifty 3-pack, allowing you to experiment with both the Lumen Lift and Light Pillar, or just print multiple of the same.

Final thoughts

Regardless of which print you are drawn to the most, these solar lighting options are flexible in terms of where you wish to place them, and are excellent at enhancing the ambiance of any space.

They are cheap and simple to print, also making them great projects for starting out with 3D printing, or teaching your children the joys of solar power as the internal wiring is straight-forward and does not require the use of power tools or complicated schematics.

All in all, we are sure you will love one or more of these designs, and we hope you will try them out and leave a comment on the author’s page.
